Energy, Power Engineering, Utilities
Utilities providers today are seen to provide an essential service. Our entire lives are based on reliable and abundant energy supplies without which our diversified and highly technology based economy would come to a grinding halt. The utilities sector is regulated to a greater or lesser extent so that many utilities providers are entirely or partly state-owned. Germany’s lack of natural resources and energy self-sufficiency means that the supply of energy plays an important role in foreign policy, issues of security and geopolitics.
Interview with Prof. Eicke Weber, head of the Fraunhofer-Institut for solar energy systems
Germany it seems has turned its back on nuclear power generation. This has made the search for alternatives to replace fossil fuel fired power stations all the more urgent. Coal, oil and gasfired power stations release enormous quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. They also burn fuels that will one day run out. In contrast, there is an unlimited supply of wind and sunshine, both of which are completely free; ‘all’ we have to do is tap that energy in an efficient and economically viable way. This is, however, easier said than done. more...

Power Converter Solutions GmbH in Berlin reveals that power converters are needed to
convert the captured energy from a power plant or a wind park into power for electrical
equipment. Even rail vehicles require power converters to convert the electricity coming
from overhead lines, giving it the right voltage and frequency for use with electric
equipment of rail operators. more...
