Continuus-Properzi, S.p.A.
Continuous success
In 2007 Continuus-Properzi celebrated its 60th anniversary under the leadership of Giulio Properzi, son of the founder and Chairman of the Company for the past 35 years.
When Ilario Properzi established his business, the tragedy of the Second World War was engraved in the memory of all the survivors and there was a large demand for cable to rebuild the infrastructure. The continuous casting and direct rolling equipment perfectly satisfied this demand. “My grandfather pioneered the continuous casting and rolling method,” says Dr. Chiara Properzi, member of the Board of Directors and granddaughter of the company’s founder. “His innovativeness made possible the rapid progress in cable manufacturing.”
Wholly owned by the Properzi family, Continuus-Properzi offers tailormade complete lines for the production of non-ferrous rod and ingots. The main materials processed with the machinery are aluminium, aluminium alloys, copper, zinc and lead. A dedicated division deals with the equipment for mainly ferrous application, and stranding machines. The company also provides process and engineering consulting, technical assistance and spare parts services, even for equipment that is more than 50 years old.
Continuus-Properzi has 200 employees and achieved sales of 51 million EUR in 2009. The export share is 95%. “Our equipment is used in 45 countries across the globe,” states Commercial Director Carmelo Maria Brocato. The international presence of Continuus-Properzi is supported by sales offices in Saint-Ouenl’Aumône, France and in Maryland, USA, and a manufacturing operation for components in Tunisia. Recently, the company signed a historic contract covering the supply of four complete continuous casting and rolling lines for aluminium rod to Vedanta Aluminium in India.
When commissioned, the four wire rod mills will produce some 400,000 t of aluminium rod per year and Vedanta will become the largest single-site rod producer in the world. As a result, Continuus-Properzi will make a major contribution to the electrification of India, a gigantic project which involves the supply of electricity to those thousands of villages that are still without it.
Another large-scale project enhancing the demand for aluminium rod for electrical applications is the Arab Grid which aims to connect the networks of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan. “The demand for our machines is growing alongside the ongoing supply of the world population with electric power,” explains Dr. Properzi.
